Dore Schary, playwright and producer, has announced that he will produce on Broadway next season a drama on Soviet anti-Semitism by Elie Wiesel, the noted Jewish author. The world premiere of the Wiesel drama, “The Madness of God,” will be staged at the Habimah Theater in Tel Aviv in Hebrew, opening October 8 to mark Habimah’s 50th anniversary.
Mr. Schary, who is also chairman of the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith, said that Mr. Wiesel wrote the play in French, and it was translated into English by Nathan Edelman, professor of French at Columbia University, and his wife. Lily Edelman, director of the B’nai B’rith adult education program. Among Mr. Wiesel’s works are two books based on personal visits to the USSR, dealing with Soviet discrimination against Jews.
Mr. Schary said the director will be Hy Kalus, the Habimah’s newly-appointed artistic director, who will assume that post in the spring.
