Elimination of Racial Classification of Drivers Sought in Seattle

A demand that the Department of Licenses of Washington State eliminate racial classification from applications for drivers’ licenses was made here by the Anti-Defamation League of British

The league, in a letter to Mrs. Delle Urquhart, director of the license bureau, referred to numerous complaints over the racial identification on drivers’ licensee and denied that this was necessary for identification of the driver. It pointed out that seven states which had asked the applicant’s race, no longer do so, and the State of Colorado is expected to drop the question from its new application forms.

The letter declared that the Washington Revised Code provisions dealing with licenses do not “give sanction to the present practice of requiring ‘race identification.'” It urged that the question be dropped from the 1954 forms.
