A total of 4,324 Jews from the former republics of the Soviet Union immigrated to Israel in February, the lowest monthly total since last June.
An additional 2,424 Jews from the republics arrived in the United States under the government’s refugee program, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society reported.
That figure was the lowest monthly total since July 1991.
February has traditionally been a slow month for emigration from the republics.
And while the number of Jews arriving in Israel last month was 28 percent lower than January’s total, it was actually higher than the total number of arrivals in February 1992, according to figures provided by the National Conference on Soviet Jewry.
According to the conference’s Soviet Jewry Research Bureau, a total of 10,340 Jews from the Soviet successor states have arrived in Israel so far this calendar year, only slightly less than the total at this point last year.
The total number of arrivals in the United States this fiscal year is 16,650. Up to about 40,000 Jews from the former Soviet republics will be allowed to come to the United States during the fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30.
