Jewish emigration from Poland to Palestine reached the lowest ebb during the month of January, according to official figures made known today.
During the month 38 left for Palestine. One hundred and twenty-five returned from Palestine during the same period.
JEWISH COMMUNAL ACTIVITIES
The goal of the Brooklyn Federation of Jewish Charities $2,500,000 drive has been raised to $3,000,000 because of personal pledges made to Nathan S. Jonas at a testimonial dinner at the Hotel Biltmore, it was announced by Walter N. Rothschild, Chairman of the drive. At the Biltmore dinner Mr. Jonas pledged to raise $100,000 on behalf of his brother, Ralph Jonas, if $400,000 were promised by those present. Fifty men promised the necessary sum within half an hour.
An additional $100,000 has been received in cash contributions to the campaign during the last few days. These contributions are not included in the additional pledges sum. James H. Post, active in Protestant charities, gave $18,000; Mrs. Frederick Brown, wife of the leader of the Manhattan Federation’s last campaign, subscribed $5,000 in addition to her husband’s previous contribution of $25,000. The largest individual contribution announced is that of Isaac and Moe Parshelsky, which is $30,000.
BREVITIES
Emanuel H. Austerlitz, founder of the Cincinnati “Freie Presse”, German language newspaper, died on Tuesday at the Home for the Jewish Aged. His age was 86.
Mr. Austerlitz was born in Prague on Dec. 8, 1839, and came to the United States in 1865. He came to Cincinnati in 1866 and, after working a short time with the Block Publishing Company, founded the “Freie Presse.” In 1886 he sold his interest in the paper.
Harold C. Weiss of Yonkers heads the honor roll at the School of Commerce, Accounts and Finance of New York University, with a grade of A in every subject. The honor list of 169 includes 73 Jewish students.
CORRECTION
The report from London of the election to Parliament of a Jewish candidate from North Southwork was erroneously given yesterday as referring to Bertram Stuart Straus.
E. A. Straus was elected, having defeated Dr. Haden Guest and George Isaacs.
