Son-in-law of Von Tirpitz Caused Lecture Cancellation (Jewish Telegraphic Agency)
Emil Ludwig, popular German Jewish biographer, is the center of a storm in the German press due to an incident which occurred in Copenhagen this week.
The noted author was scheduled to deliver a lecture at the University of Copenhagen. Due to the intervention of the German Minister, Herr Hassell, a son-in-law of former Admiral von Tirpitz, leader of Germany’s submarine campaign during the World War, the lecture was cancelled. The German Minister contended that Ludwig is not a profound research scholar.
When the details of the incident became known, indignation was manifest in the Danish academic world. At the initiative of Copenhagen’s leading daily, “Politiken,” a reception in honor of Herr Ludwig was given. Representatives of the diplomatic corps and leading Danish artists and scientists were present. Professor Bupl who delivered the principal address praising Herr Ludwig, stressed the point that in the biographer’s work the research spirit is predominant. The German Minister, Herr Hassell, was conspicuous by his absence.
