Emir Abdullah’s Expenditures Questioned

That more than onethird of the revenue of Transjordania is taken for the personal use of the ruler was brought cut in the reply to a question in the House of Lords as to whether Emir Abdullah’s personal expenditure of 90,000 pounds out of a revenue of 120,000 was not excessive. Lord Arnold, answering this question, stated that while Abdullah’s personal expenditure was undoubtedly heavy, the proportion was not as alleged. He said that Abdullah’s civil list for 1923 was 69,500 pounds out of a total of 200,000 pounds revenue, but that the expenses included subsidies to various tribesmen who might otherwise be troublesome. However, as a possible restraining influence, Abdullah’s personal expenses will be kept separate in the future. Most of the revenue of Transjordania is in the form of a subsidy from the British Government.
