A decision to abolish university autonomy in Rumania in connection with the recent anti-Jewish riots in the Bucharest University, was adopted today at a joint conference of the rectors of all universities and representatives of the government.
This decision means that in the event of riots the police will enter university grounds.
“This step is necessary in order to maintain order in the universities,” representatives of the Ministry of Interior explained at the conference.
WARNING BY PRESIDENT
The president of the Bucharest University, Dr. Gheorghiu, issued a statement to the press in which he warns students “to concentrate on their studies and not to indulge in he question of unconstitutional racial restrictions.”
The president’s statement particularly condemns the attempt of anti-Semitic students to force the government to introduce a numerus clausus for Jewish students in the medical profession. It emphasizes that the anti-Semitic student out-breaks during the last few weeks have done great harm to the prestige of the country.
