A meeting at the Young Israel Building, 229 East Broadway, of Jewish retail merchants and workers endorsed the efforts being made by Kehilo Kedosho, of Greater New York to have Saturday officially declared a day of rest by the NRA.
Dr. Jonas Simon, chairman of the organization, presided at the meeting which was addressed by Dr. Henry Keller, noted physician and lecturer. Among the other speakers were Wolf Kestner, N. Gooterman and J. Levine. All the speakers endorsed the proposal and pledged the aid of the organizatioins they represented to bring about the adoption of Saturday as an official day of rest.
The Jewish Sabbath Alliance, at a special executive committee meeting, resolved to take immediate steps against the adoption of rest-days in the NRA codes for retail shopkeepers. This was done after the receipt of reports that many sections are planning to include Sunday rest in the codes.
In a statement to the NRA at Washington, Rabbi Bernard Drachman, president of the Alliance, declared, “the NRA cannot permit the codes to work hardships and undue competition upon a large portion of the citizenry who observe the seventh-day Sabbath according to their religious beliefs.”
