Any Englishman may be proud of the position of England in the Near East today, due to the Palestine mandate, Col. Leopold H. Amery, British Colonial Secretary, declared in an address he delivered last night in Birmingham.
Palestine is a matter of pride to any Englishman, the Colonial Secretary continued, contrasting its position today with even ten years ago. The wonderful experiment which Balfour’s statesmanship encouraged is giving opportunity and protection to Jews to return to the land of their forefathers and develop in their ancient home under a sense of uplifting which they cannot feel in many parts of the world.
The position which England has achieved in Egypt, she is now achieving in Palestine. The Near East is an immense insurance for the security of the whole British Empire, the Colonial Secretary declared.
Col. Amery paid tribute to Disraeli’s remarkable prescience. He looked into the future with uncanny insight and realized England’s future position in the Near East countries, the cradle of religion and culture. Events have proved him right, he declared.
