Enrollment in Jewish Schools Increased in New York J. E. C. Reports

The number of pupils enrolled in Jewish schools in Greater New York in the current school year reached a total of 136, 391. This is an increase of a little over three percent over the total enrollment of the previous year, the Jewish Education Committee reported today.

Because of the excellent cooperation of the 675 Jewish schools of all types operating in Greater New York, it was possible for the JEC to publish the results of its annual Jewish school census before the end of the school year, much earlier than in previous years the report said.

The enrollment in high school classes increased a little over four percent during the past year. This is somewhat higher than the increase of a little over three percent in the elementary school classes. The higher enrollment in high school classes took place entirely in one-day-a-week schools, where high school classes are part of the confirmation department and meet for one session per week.

The greatest gain in enrollment over the past year was shown by the all-day schools, where the number of children increased by a little over eleven percent as against an increase of a little over four percent in the weekday-afternoon schools and a small decline in the enrollment in one-day-a-week schools.

During the past year the all-day schools and weekday afternoon schools have increased their proportional share in the total enrollment. All-day schools now account for 19 percent of the total school enrollment, compared with 17-1/2 percent the previous year Weekday afternoon schools had 45 percent of the total enrollment compared with 44-1 2 percent the previous year. The one-day-a-week school showed a slight decline from 57-1/2 percent the previous year, to 36 percent this year. The latter type of school, however has increased substantially its proportional share of the total high school enrollment from 29 percent to 36 percent.
