Episcopal churches throughout the Diocese of Western New York were urged today to make “the strongest possible appeal” in behalf of the current drive of the United Jewish Appeal by the Rt. Rev. Lauriston L. Scaife, Episcopal Bishop of the Diocese. “There is no greater challenge to the Christian conscience of America today than the desperate plight of the suffering Jewish people of the old world,” he said in a wire dispatched to all church leaders in his Diocese.
A sum of $500,000 was pledged today to the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York at the eleventh annual officers’ luncheon of the Council of Organizations of the U.J.A., held at the Hotel Commodore. Meir Hartman, managing director of Amidar, Israel’s housing construction authority, stressed in an address to the 1,200 luncheon guests the current urgent need for expanded housing in the new state. Other speakers included Rep. Emanuel Celler and William Rosenwald, a national chairman of the U.J.A.
