Delegates to a one-day convention of the metropolitan section of the Protestant Episcopal Church here, representing 136, 000 members of the denomination, voted to oppose draft amendments to the U.S. Constitution, now pending in the House of Representatives, which would void the Supreme Court’s decisions banning prayers and Bible-reading in public schools.
Leaders of the convention, which was held yesterday, said today that the 900 delegates defeated “by a wide margin” a resolution upholding adoption of the constitutional amendments. The Rt, Rev. Horace W.B. Donegan, bishop of the church, did not participate in the hot, prolonged debate on the issue, since he was chairman of the session. But one of the opponents of amendments announced that the bishop backs the Supreme Court’s ruling, and Bishop Donegan did not deny that statement.
