Mrs. Erna Sondheimer Michael, former chairman of the Greater New York United Jewish Appeal’s women’s division and co-donor of the Erna and Jakob Michael Institute of Biomedical Research of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University, died today at her home here at the age of 59.
She was also a co-founder of the Einstein Medical College and of the Nevei Michael, Children’s Village of the Hapoel Hamizrachi in Israel. She served on the board of the American Friends of the Hebrew University and was a co-founder of its Jerusalem campus Recently, she and her husband had arranged to transfer the ancient Italian Synagogue of Vittorio Veneto to Jerusalem and donated it to the Bezalel National Museum.
Born in Frankfurt, she was the daughter of Dr. Albert Sondheimer, industrialist and Jewish communal leader. She married Jakob Michael, a leading industrialist and philanthropist. The couple lived in Germany and Holland before settling in the United States in 1939.
