Senator William H. King, a Morman, appears to have defeated Ernest Bamberger, a Jew, in the race for the United States Senatorship. There were many scratched ballots.
For the past two or three weeks, Mr. Bamberger has been attacked by a group of Republicans, including former Governor Charles R. Mabey, who charged that his nomination was obtained through the influence of the Order of Sevens, claimed to be a secret Utah Republican organization very strong in Salt Lake County and of sinister influence politically. Mr. Bamberger was not openly accused of being a member of the organization himself.
Religious prejudice appears to have played very little. If any, part in the contest. No mention was made of it in the public prints. The contest was close between Hoover and Smith in Utah, but the defeat of Bamberger and Wattis, Republican nominee for Governor, is considered certain, although the final returns are not in.
VICTOR BERGER, SOCIALIST, REELECTED IN MILWAUKEE
Victor Berger, Socialist member of the House of Representatives, was resurned to the House in the elections held yesterday, early despatches from Milwaukee to the Socialist headquarters in New York state.
Appointment of Isadere Oxie Reichler, of Uttca. N. Y., as deputy commissioner of public safety of that city, has just been made by Mayor Fred. J. Rath.
A $35,000 addition to the Jewish Home for the Aged at Syracuse, N. Y., has just been decided upon. A building permit for the work has been obtained.
