The new port facilities of Eilat, Israel’s southernmost port, were inaugurated in the presence of Premier Levi Eshkol. Among the features of the 26, 000, 000 pound ($9, 000, 000) port are a huge wharf, potash and phosphate warehouses and equipment for loading bulk cargoes with a 10, 000-ton daily capacity.
The Premier expressed the hope that the port would develop Israel’s ties with Asian-African countries. Transport Minister Moshe Carmel said that in 1970, the port would handle more than a million tons annually compared with the present 233, 000 tons a year.
