The condition of Premier Levi Eshkol, who has been hospitalized for rest and observation since Saturday, has improved and he is now expected to remain in the hospital only until the end of next week, doctors attending the Premier announced today in a statement. It was the first report from the doctors since the Premier entered the hospital.
The optimistic report came after information that officials of the Premier’s Mapai Party had been discussing means of avoiding a delay in the negotiations for a new Cabinet because of the Premier’s illness. Among the plans was a postponement of Finance Minister Pinhas Sapir’s scheduled trip this weekend to the United States. After the doctors issued the report, a spokesman for the Finance Minister said he would depart as scheduled.
Meanwhile, Gen. Zvi Tsur, who was elected to Parliament last November 2 on former Premier David Ben-Gurion’s dissident Israel Workers Party (Rafi) slate, resigned today. He had been number eight on the Rafi election slate. He told the Rabi political committee that he preferred to concentrate on his duties as chairman of the Israel desalination committee and general manager of the Mekorot Water Company. He reiterated his intention to remain an active member of the political committee.
