A 10,000-word essay, “The Reaction of Reform Judaism in America to Political Zionism, 1897-1922,” today won the first prize in a national essayc contest conducted by the American Jewish Historical Society. The winner, Mrs. Naoni W. Cohen, of New York City, will receive the $350 prize. She is a teacher of history at Hunter College.
The second prize of $100 went to Milton Plesur, of Buffalo, N.Y., for his work, “The Impact of Political Zionism on American Thought, 1880-1917,” it was announced by Lee M. Friedman, of the A.J.H.S. The contest was designed to stimulate interest and research in American Jewish history. It was the first enterprise of its kind conducted in the 58 years of the existence of the American Jewish Historical Society.
