An Israeli delegation, led by Haim Zadok, Minister of Commerce and Industry, left today for Brussels to try to persuade the European Common Market to rescind “reference prices” on Israeli oranges. Under a ruling by the European Economic Community’s market commission, at the request of Italy, the cost of Jaffa oranges in countries to which Israel exports citrus, will be 20 percent higher for the consumer. The result would act at a great competitive disadvantage to Israel’s citrus exports.
“I intend,” Mr. Zadok said prior to boarding an airplane for Brussels, “to explain to the Common Market Ministers the seriousness of their decision to fix ‘reference prices’ on oranges, and the possible effect of this decision on our future relations with the Common Market.”
(In Brussels, today, Amiel Najar, Israel’s Ambassador to the European Economic Community, presented to the EEC Ministers a letter of protest against the Italian plan to apply the “reference prices” to oranges imported from outside the EEC countries.)
