Israel’s deputy prime minister, in England as part of a diplomatic initiative to drum up European support for Israeli plans to separate from the Palestinians, told a London audience Thursday that though he and Prime Minister Ariel Sharon recognize the difficulties of pulling out of the Gaza Strip and parts of the West Bank, it is the only way to prevent further confrontation with the Palestinians.
