The Israel Government and the Intergovernmental Committee for European Migration (ICEM) reached agreement today for the ICEM to extend assistance to nationals of Austria, Germany, Greece, Italy and the Netherlands who wish to settle in Israel permanently, provided their emigration is approved by their respective governments, it was announced today.
The accord, the third between Israel and the ICEM, also provides for continuation of ICEM resettlement aid to European Jewish refugees who have left their country of citizenship and arrived in Western Europe en route to Israel, or whose postwar re-establishment in Europe has been found to be impossible. During the past 23 months ICEM has assisted over 3,000 refugees to resettle in Israel.
The new agreement provides for the movement of 2,000 persons to Israel this year. The Israeli Government has appointed the Jewish Agency to handle all pre-embarkation arrangements for Jewish resettlers.
