Dr. Cyrus Adler, president of the Jewish Theological Seminary, prophesied tonight that “the ruthless masters of Europe’s destiny” would go down to defeat, as had other empire-builders in history, and the subject peoples would return to their former status. He addressed a dinner at the seminary in connection with the 21st annual convention of the Women’s League of the United Synagogue of America.
Urging Jews to take “a philosophic outlook” and a “long view of history,” Dr. Adler pointed out that not one of the world empires of ancient times existed today. “The ruthless masters of Europe’s destiny will also go,” he said, “and what they have attempted to put together will revert to the states as their populations desire. Poland, dismembered by Austria, Prussia and Russia in 1772, was rightfully reestablished as a nation by the Treaty of Versailles. May it continue to be an independent nation.”
