The announcement of Syrian authorities contains, however, provisions which national-minded Jews will never accept. It provides that such Jews who are ready to migrate to Syria must agree not to employ any other labor but Arab and must also not spread any Zionist ideas in the country. They will also not be permitted to buy land in those parts of Syria which are adjacent to the Palestine frontier.
The provisions of the Syrian authorities, though they look uninviting on their surface, may nevertheless attract certain classes of Jews from Germany who are not particular about Zionism and who also do not care whether they will reside in sections neighboring to Palestine or in any other sections of Syria. Negotiations for buying land on the Iraquian frontier have been going on between certain groups of German Jews and the Syrian government for the last six months, and the present announcement of the Syrian government may be the result of these negotiations.
