A lurid murder was solved within hours by Israeli police Monday when a 22-year-old suspect from Carmiel in Galilee confessed to beating and strangling his 16-year-old ex-girlfriend in a fit of rage.
Only 36 hours after she was reported missing, the battered body of Caroline Sten, a local beauty queen, was discovered in underbrush on a roadside less than 2 miles from Carmiel.
The immediate reaction of residents was to seek out and beat up young Arab laborers in town, although the police ruled out the intifada as a motive. Thirteen residents were detained for assault.
But after several hours of questioning, Yitzhak Schram, the former boyfriend, admitted killing Sten, police said.
