A former SS guard at the Mauthausen concentration camp where thousands of Jews and other victims of the Nazis were done to death has been named a candidate for the Bavarian Parliament by the right-wing Christian Social Union, a party allied with Chancellor Konrad Adenauer’s Christian Democratic Union.
The candidate, 49-year-old Peter Prueckeimaier, has been named for a “safe” constituency and is assured of election in the Fall balloting. Now a prosperous farmer and cattle dealer in the Hallerdau district near Munich, Prueckeimaier joined the Nazi Party in 1933. He became a member of the Christian Social Union three years ago.
