The trial of Franz Rademacher, former German Foreign Office official, charged with responsibility for the mass deportation of Jews from various occupied countries during World War II, opened here today.
The prosecution, declared that Rademacher planned to herd together and deport to Madagascar at the end of the war the remnants of European Jewry, and that he was fully aware of the fact that the Jews whom he was deporting were going to extermination camps. Specifically, the prosecution charged the former Foreign Office official with responsibility in the deportation of 108,000 Jews from France and 80,000 from Rumania–nearly all going to the Auschwitz death camp where over 80 percent of them were murdered.
