Four thousand Jews crowded the auditorium of the Hebraica Club here to capacity last night, and hundreds milled in the street outside the structure listening to loud speakers, as the Jewish community observed the 20th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. The principal speaker was Senator Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliverra, former Brazilian President who, as Chief Executive, had aided the admission into this country of many Jewish refugees from Hungary and Egypt.
The event at the Hebraica Club was conducted under the auspices of the Federation of Brazilian Jewish Societies and the Zionist Organization of Brazil. A smaller group, the Communist-oriented Volkshaus, had canceled its own separate observance and was admitted to co-sponsorship of the overall event. Protesting against that step, the Ashkenazi Congregation and the Bessaraber Farband conducted another commemoration at another hall.
The popular “Mosaica” program, a Jewish series on the national television network, put on a special Warsaw Ghetto anniversary production, featuring the Rev. Nicolas Boer, a Catholic priest who teaches at the University of Sao Paulo. He called for the defense of all human rights in the spirit of the Warsaw Ghetto fighters and in the spirit of the recent encyclical by Pope John XXIII.
