Excavations at Tel Lakhish, a Biblical fortress city in the southern Judean foothills and site of the remarkable discovery of the Lakhish letters written in the archaic Hebrew script from the period of the Prophet Jeremiah, were recently resumed under the direction of Dr. David Yessishkin of the Archaeological Institute of Tel Aviv University. The expedition, receiving technical aid and assistance from the Jewish National Fund, has uncovered within the ancient city walls at the hill’s summit the remains of structures from the Canaanite and Israelite periods.
Some 45 outstanding science majors from abroad are spending this summer gaining research experience at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot within the framework of its International Student Workshop. Chosen from hundreds of applicants, the students are from sevens countries. More than half are from the United States, while others have come to Israel from England, France, Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden.
