The Executive Council of the State of Massachusetts yesterday unanimously confirmed the appointment of Lewis Goldberg as Justice of the Superior Court of Massachusetts.
Mr. Goldberg, a former member of the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities and prominent in Jewish affairs, was nominated for the post by Governor Joseph B. Ely on August 1st.
Justice Goldberg was sworn into office by Governor Ely yesterday and will formally assume the duties of his post on Monday.
Justice Goldberg succeeds Judge Henry P. Lummus, elevated to fill the vacancy on the bench of the Supreme Judicial Court declined by Professor Felix Frankfurter of the Law School of Harvard University.
Justice Goldberg, who was born in Russia, received his education at Harvard College and at Harvard Law School.
He is prominently identified with Jewish and civic activities.
From 1915 to 1921 he was assistant United States attorney for Massachusetts, and from 1921 to 1926 Assistant Attorney General of Massachusetts. For a period he served as Commissioner of the Department of Public Utilities.
Justice Goldberg is associated with the Zionist Organization of America, the American Jewish Committee, the Menorah Society and the Big Brother movement.
He was the first president of the Jewish Big Brother Association of Boston, serving three terms and is a trustee of the Boston Federated Jewish Charities. He is a director of the Boston Y.M.H.A.-Y.W.H.A. and of the Big Brother and Big Sister Federation, Inc.
