Dr. Julius Becker, prominent journalist and former president of the Zionist Federation in Switzerland, was appointed by the Executive of the Jewish Agency today to represent the Agency in Geneva to deal with diplomatic matters concerning the Palestine mandate and to foster Jewish interests among members of the League of Nations.
Dr. Becker will succeed the late victor Jacobson, who died several months ago in Switzerland, where for years he represented Zionist interests before members of the Mandates Commission and the Council of the League of Nations. Although he succeeds Mr. Jacobson, Dr. Becker will hold membership in the Jewish Agency, as did Mr. Jacobson.
Dr. Becker has been known in diplomatic circles for many years in his capacity as an international journalist. He represented the German Jewish Vossische Zeitung of Berlin and the Ullstein Press Syndicate, for which he has covered League of Nations sessions ever since the League has been in existence. He was ousted from his position with the German concern as soon the Nazis took over control of the Ullstein house.
When Mr. Jacobson died, the Executive of the Jewish Agency considered Dr. Becker as the outstanding candidate to represent Zionist interests in Geneva. Numerous other candidates were on the list but after final consultations with Jerusalem the Executive today announced Dr. Becker as its choice.
