That relief for victims of Nazi persecution constitutes a nonsectarian rather than a Jewish problem was emphasized by James G. McDonald, League of Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, at a United Jewish Appeal luncheon in his honor at the Hotel Waldorf-Astoria Friday.
Mr. McDonald told 1,000 women who haid paid $25 each to attend that there were more than 1,000 ###holars and scientists among the ### who were obliged to flee from Germany.
“Palestine,” he said, “remains the chief country of refuge. It continues to be the only country, so far as I know, in the whole world which is so prosperous that it has a shortage of labor.”
Other speakers were Mrs. Herbert H. Lehman, Mrs. Felix M. Warburg, Mrs. David E. Goldfarb and Mrs. Bernard S. Deutsch. Mrs. Richard P. Limburg presided.
Mr. McDonald was to sail for Europe Saturday aboard the Ile de France.
