Continued attraction of volunteer leaders of high caliber by private social welfare agencies depends on their conviction concerning the need for skilled and well-trained professional staff, the annual meeting of the Jewish Community Center Division of the National Jewish Welfare Board was told here.
Dr. Benjamin B. Rosenberg, executive director of the Associated Jewish Philanthropies of Greater Boston, said that, if leadership development programs are to be successful in social welfare agencies, "we must provide the necessary staff which can help to attract and work with men and women who in their personal and professional lives have lived and worked with associates of highest commercial and professional attainment."
Dr. Rosenberg spoke at the opening session of the two-day annual meeting of the Jewish Community Center Division, through which the JWB serves as the national association of Jewish Community Centers and YM-YWHAs. Today’s leadership in social welfare agencies, he declared, "demands that staff be equal in skills, in training, and in personality to the tasks created by current developments and conditions." Agencies in the social welfare field, he said, "need a conscious and constant inventory" of leadership needs and with it "a conviction of the need to provide opportunities for the exercise of creative leadership in all levels of agency program and operation."
