A party of agricultural, colonization and irrigation experts completed a three-day survey of the Negev, including the southernmost Elath area, under the auspices of the Jewish Agency’s agricultural and settlements division, it was announced here today.
The group, under the leadership of Levi Eshkol, inspected wide areas of the desert with a view to determining the possibilities for agricultural reclamation and the harnessing and development of rainfall as a source of water power. The experts also studied problems of communications, transportation and climate.
Four groups of recently-arrived immigrants today established colonies in various parts of the country. Each group is composed of approximately 100 persons. A group of North African Jews settled near Athlit, while a contingent of Czech Jews founded a colony near Zichron Yaacov. A third group made up of East European immigrants established themselves in the vicinity of Yavneh while the fourth group, whose members resided temporarily in Jaffa, set up their new homes near Beer Tuviah.
