Extreme Left-wingers Gain Control of Mapam Party; Get 60 Percent of Votes in Election

The extreme left-wing of the left Socialist Mapam Party of Israel has captured complete control of the party according to the results of last week’s intra-party elections for convention delegates, which were released here during the week-end. Ninety percent of the party membership voted.

The extreme leftist faction, formerly Hashomer Hatzair, which is led in Parliament by deputy Meir Yaari, gained 60 percent of the ballots, The Achdut Avoda group, led by deputies Israel Bar-Yehuda and Israel Galili, received 36 percent of the vote, while the Poale Zion faction, under the leadership of deputy Moshe Erem, obtained only four percent.
