The price of falafel on pitta, the Israeli equivalent of a hot dog on a roll, rose 20 percent yesterday. Vendors who sell the delicacy on street corners all over the country said the increase was due to the high price of flour and cooking oil set by the government last week. The vegetables, spices and other items that go to make falafel were not raised in price by the government but have gone up anyway, angry customers were told.
Higher prices are also being demanded for canned goods, alcoholic beverages and soft drinks including the ubiquitous Coca Cola, Schweppes tonic and Sun Fresh fruit juices.
