The most prominent non-Jewish semitists in Britain today united in a dignified manifestation against the Nazi misuse and distortion of the teachings of the Talmud to justify Jewish persecution. Their protest will take the form of a solemn meeting to be held at the Royal Society on Dec. 22nd, honoring Dr. Lazarus Goldschmidt, noted Talmudist, on his 70th birthday.
Now living in London as a refugee, Dr. Goldschmidt was the first scholar to compile a complete translation of the Talmud in German which was published in Germany before the Nazis came to power. Among the most famous theologians who have joined the committee which is arranging the celebration of his 70th birthday are professors from the universities of Cambridge, Oxford, Glasgow, Manchester, London as well as from King’s College and St. Andrew’s University. The Jewish members of the committee include Chief Rabbi Hertz, Prof. Zelig Brodetsky, Prof. Norman Bentwich and others.
