A series of projects to further an interest in Yiddish language, literature and culture on the university campuses, is being undertaken jointly by the B’nai B’rith Hillel Foundations and the Farband Foundation, according to a joint announcement made public here today by Jacob Katzman, general secretary of Farband-Labor Zionist Order, and Rabbi Banjamin M. Kahn, national Hillel director.
“Taking cognizance of the growing interest that is being manifested by students and faculty in many universities in Yiddish, its cultural heritage and present creative expression, the joint program will undertake to provide the facilities and tools for acquiring a deeper knowledge of the Yiddish culture,” the announcement said.
The Farband Foundation will make available outstanding poets, writers, lecturers, dramatic artists and scholars, who will be presented by Hillel Foundations on the campuses. Through this confrontation with present-day creators of Yiddish culture, it is hoped to establish a living link between Jewish youth and this vital part of its people’s heritage. In addition, Hillel Foundation libraries and music rooms will be provided by the Farband Foundation with basic works of Yiddish literature, both in the original and in English translations, and with collections of records of Yiddish folk songs and dramatic readings.
