Opponents of displaced persons legislation sought to return the House-approved Celler Bill to Sen. Pat McCarran’s Judiciary Committee. The bill has been debated in the Upper House for the past two days.
The bill, which would remove anti-Jewish and anti-Catholic restrictions from the present DP law, came under heavy fire today as Senators for and against the measure rallied strength for a possible showdown vote tomorrow at a special session on whether to send the bill back to committee until 1950.
The absent Sen. McCarran, sent the Senate a message today saying that any move to admit more displaced persons was “a gigantic fraud” to let into the United States a flood of “certain select groups who would discriminate against others.” Sen. Edwin C. Johnson read the message in which McCarran denied that present DP legislation is discriminatory to Jews. McCarran said that he had received testimony that “all Jews will be out of DP camps by August of next year.”
