The Rev. Charles E. Coughlin, declaring his National Union for Social Justice was “thoroughly discredited” by the results of last week’s election, has suspended its activities less than a week after he said it would some day “protect the minority Jews” from “the Hitler philosophy in Washington.”
Announcement of suspension and his withdrawal from ” all radio activity in the best interests of all the people” was followed today by a statement of his immediate superior, Bishop Michael J. Gallagher, expressing hope that “the people will call him back to the air — where he belongs.”
Father Coughlin’s farewell statement on the air Saturday night was made in fulfillment of a promise issued before the election that he would retire from radio activity if the candidate he was backing, William Lemke, failed to poll 9,000,000 votes.
