A despatch from the Associated Press reports a plea for a more tolerant view of the beliefs of others, based upon an effort to understand them, voiced by Bishop Francis J. McConnell. president of the Federal Council of Churches, at an interdenominational service in the First Presbyterian Church of Glens Falls.
“Blind criticism of another’s belief is born of ignorance,” he said.
“The church is now going through a period of social bewilderment from which it will emerge stronger than ever. Changing conditions have brought periods of bewilderment on many occasions, but each time the pendulum of time has swung aside the prejudices and left the church more firmly intrenched.”
Bishop McConnell touched briefly on socialism, which, he said, was running along a wide parallel with the church and was endeavoring to adjust many troubles of the human race. He urged that his listeners endeavor to understand more clearly the human needs from which the Socialist movement had sprung.
