Federal Council of Churches Issues Good Will Message for Rosh Hashanah

A message of goodwill to the Jews of the world was issued on the occasion of Rosh Hashanah. beginning the Jewish year 5689, by the Committee on Goodwill Between Jews and Christians of the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America. This is the first time that a Protestant Christian group, has taken cognizance of the celebration of the Jewish New Year and has extended a message of goodwill and appreciation on such an occasion. The message read:

“We Christians extend our sincere well-wishes to the Jews. As your 5689th year opens this evening we hope that Christians and Jews may make this a year of increased mutual understanding. Joined in a common enterprise, the progress of mankind, we believe we may find our unity as we realize our interdependence. Christians appreciate your achievements in the arts, the sciences, philosophy, and in religion. In a very real sense you enrich humanity.”

The Federal Council of the Church of Christ in America includes twenty-eight Protestant bodies. Dr. S. Parkes Cadman is President.

The Committee on Goodwill Between Jews and Christians includes Rev. Alfred W. Anthony, Rev. Henry A. Atkinson, Dr. Samuel M. Cavert, Dr. John H. Finley, Raymond B. Fosdick, Dr. Robert L. Kelly, Rt. Rev. Arthur S. Lloyd. Dr. Chas. S. Macfarland, Dr. John A. Marquis, Dean Howard C. Robbins, William H. Short and Rev. Stanley White. Everett R. Clinchy is Secretary.
