Faced with what speakers described as the gravest financial crisis in its eighteen years’ history, the Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies at the Hotel Astor last night launched an emergency campaign to meet a deficit of $2,071,000. More than 1,200 leaders in philanthropic, civic and business life were warned that the 1934 budget must be completed in order to keep the doors of Federation’s institutions open.
Beginning this morning 3,800 volunteer workers will start the actual work of soliciting donations for the $2,071,000 needed, the amount necessary to complete the year’s $3,655,000 budget for the ninety-one affiliated social welfare agencies.
HARRY HOPKINS HONORED
Harry L. Hopkins, federal relief administrator, was guest of honor. Other speakers included former Justice Joseph M. Proskauer president of Federation, and Harry M. Ittleson, chairman of the dinner committee, who presided.
Heading this year’s deficit campaign committee are Arthur Lehman, Lawrence Marx, Paul M. Rosenthal and Percy S. Strauss. The women volunteers are being led by Mrs. Joseph Brettauer, chairman, and Mrs. Julius Ochs Adler, associate chairman.
Among the better known Federation affiliates which will benefit by the present fund raising effort are: Mount Sinai Hospital, Montefiore Hospital for Chronic Diseases, Beth Israel Hospital, the Hebrew Orphan Asylum, the Home for Hebrew Infants and the Jewish Social Service Association.
