Federation Loses $355,000 by Straus’ Cancellation of Charity Gifts

The Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies lost an estimated bequest of $355,000 by the blanket revocation of gifts to charity and public institutions totalling nearly a million dollars by Jesse Isidor Straus, former Ambassador to France, it was revealed yesterday when his will was filed for probate.

A codicil dated July 31, 1934, gave as the cause of cancellation “the increased estate taxes upon estates of decedents” by Federal and State governments.
