The United Roumanian Jews of America, the organization which has been pleading the cause of Roumanian Jews and often criticized the Roumanian Government for its toleration of anti-Jewish excesses and general mistreatment of the Jewish population, has come out with a declaration in favor of the $60,000,000 loan which is now being sought by the Roumanian Government and negotiations for which are in progress with American bankers.

The stand was taken on the basis of assurances given by Roumanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Titulescu and the Roumanian Minister to Washington, George Cretziano, that “all necessary measures have been taken to protect Jewish life and property.”

In a statement issued by Bennett E. Siegelstein, New York attorney and president of the United Roumanian Jews of America, and Herman Speier, executive secretary, favoring the loan it was declared.

“The United Roumanian Jews of America has always taken a deep interest in the welfare of Roumania and has heretofore on various occasions rendered valuable assistance to the native country of its membership. It has always taken the position that the fortunes of its Jewish citizens are inextricably bound up with those of the country and that a prosperous happy Roumania will make possible a happy Roumanian Jewry. It therefore cannot but view with favor the efforts which Roumania is now making to stabilize its currency and to improve its financial conditions.

“The United Roumanian Jews of America has recently made certain recommendations to his Excellency the Roumanian Minister at Washington and has also formulated some requests with a view to ameliorate and improve the conditions of the Jews in Roumania. It notes with satisfaction the assurances which have been given by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Roumania to the effect that all necessary measures have been taken to protect Jewish life and property, and that it will consider with sympathy the recommendations made.

“The United Roumanian Jews of America feels that it may render a service to Roumania at this time and avails itself of the opportunity. It expresses itself in favor of the loan which Roumania is at present negotiating and hopes that the effort will meet with success.”
