A rash of anti-Semitic abuse, ranging from outspoken refusals to rent to Jews to garbage dumped on the lawn of a local rabbi, was reported today in the Hollywood Shofar, publication of the Jewish Welfare Federation of Hollywood. The incidents have occurred in South Broward County which includes this and several other resort cities just north of Miami.
According to the Shofar, ” children in South Broward passing a local junior high school on the way home from Hebrew school must daily run a gauntlet of abuse, both verbal and physical.” The paper noted further that when local elderly Jews asked to inspect a model apartment in a building being erected for senior citizens at Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, they were told by the renting agent that “we have been instructed that these apartments are not to be shown or rented to persons of the Hebrew faith.” The paper also reported that a local rabbi “frequently finds garbage on his lawn, has epithets shouted at him or his children from passing cars or has eggs thrown at his own car during the night.”
