Felix M. Warburg and James H. Becker of Chicago conferred with Maxim Litvinoff, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, on the general conditions in Russia and particularly on the progress of the Jewish settlements created with the aid of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee.
Litvinoff declared during the conference that the Soviet Government is interested to see as many Jews as possible adopt productive work, because there are no prospects for the unproductive elements in the Soviet system. This condition will be intensified with the further development of state industry and trade. The Soviet government has shown that with the granting of political rights, it wants to give the Jews equal economic possibilities.
Mr. Warburg and Mr. Becker also conferred with Peter Smidovitch, vice-president of the Soviet Union, and A. Merejin. Following an inspection of the colonies, Mr. Warburg will be received by President Kalinin.
