Fervently Orthodox yeshiva students will continue to be exempt from compulsory Israeli military service under recommendations presented by a committee appointed by Prime Minister Ehud Barak. But in a proposed change to the arrangement, the committee said students could opt to take a break from full- time religious studies at the age of 24, work a year and then serve in a rear- guard army unit for four months.
