Few Jews remain in German-occupied Yugoslavia, it was reported today by a high official of Marshal Tito’s liberation movement who has just arrived here. Of the Jews who escaped being massacred, many are fighting with Tito’s forces, while others who were deported to Italy by the Italian occupation forces, either as prisoners of war or internees, are being returned in substantial numbers to territory now held by the liberation forces.
The partisan official also revealed that there is only one Jew alive in the Yugoslav capital of Belgrade. He is 80-year-old Dr. Vukic Piade, noted gynecologist, who was president of the Belgrade Jewish community council. Although his family was murdered, the aged doctor was allowed to continue practicing. A popular Jewish officer fighting with the partisans, he said, is Major Moscoar Danson, 34, who has composed most of the battle songs of Tito’s forces.
