Of 75,000 Hungarian Jewish citizens in Budapest who are entitled to vote under the new anti-Jewish law, only 19,000 have so far obtained certification, it was revealed today. The reason ascribed for the lag is the fact that only between 1,200 and 1,400 Jews are able to register daily. It is estimated that only 25,000 Jews will participate in the general elections, opening Sunday.
A strong propaganda campaign, apparently heavily subsidized from abroad, is being carried on by the anti-Jewish Arrow Cross party after inactivity in the initial stages of the election. The party is expected to obtain between 15 and 30 seats in the new Parliament. The Government party, while putting obstacles in the way of Jewish voters in Budapest, is encouraging the Jewish vote in provincial constituencies where the Nazis are strong.
