Former Nazi Field Marshal Erich von Mannstein, one-time head of the German Army and a convicted Nazi war criminal, today received the British release order freeing him from jail after he had served eight years of an 18-year prison sentence which was later reduced to 12 years.
Von Mannstein received the order at a castle in Allmendingen in Southwest Germany where he has been living since he was released on a medical parole last August, Germans from the surrounding countryside marched to the castle where they stood cheering and singing the song “I Long for Freedom. ” The Field Marshal then joined them in singing a verse from the German national anthem, not the one which contains the words “Deutschland Uber Alles.”
