Independence Day went unnoticed on the northern front where Israeli and Syrian forces exchanged artillery fire for the 46th consecutive day along the Yom Kippur War enclave and in the Mt. Hermon area. No Israeli casualties were reported. An Israeli soldier, PFC Shalom Avitai, 21, of Jerusalem, was killed yesterday afternoon during an artillery exchange with the Syrians on the Golan Heights.
The army announced today the names of three Israeli soldiers killed Tuesday evening when their vehicle struck a mine near Nahal Gittit in the Jordan Valley. They are Sgt. Israel Gotlieb, 21, of Kfar Monash; Lance Corp. Itzhak Mizrahi, 21. of Kiryat Motzkin; and Lance Corp. Joseph Ozeri. 21, of Kfar Onno. Funeral services will be held tomorrow.
